History Of Halloween

A few facts about Halloween. (If you’re brave enough to read on!)
Halloween dates back over 2000 years to the time of the Celts who lived in Britain, it is one of the oldest celebrations in the world.
The Celts celebrated their New Year’s Eve on 31st October. It was celebrated every year with a festival called Samhain (pronounced ’sow-in’), that marked the end of the “season of the sun” (i.e. Summer) and the start of “the season of darkness and cold” ( i.e. Winter). The beginning of the Celtic New Year on 1st November
The belief of The Celts was that evil spirits came along with the long hours of winter darkness. They believed that on that night, the barriers between the spirit world and our world were at their weakest meaning that spirits were most likely to ‘break into’ our Earth.
Bonfires were built to frighten the spirits away, and The Celts feasted and danced around them. The fires brought comfort to the souls in purgatory and people held burning straw up high and prayed for them.
This is the reason for the tradition of ‘dressing up’ as scary characters, it is to symbolise the ‘evil spirits’ of old.
